Hello!

Welcome to my 17th post in our PROCESS & PLAY series.

Each session I take a closer look at a sketchbook PROCESS, chat through what I’m doing and then invite you to join me to PLAY in your sketchbook.

This month we are going back to basics and will explore the art fundamental of negative space.

This has been good practice for me to do and I’m sure will be helpful to those of you who are new to sketching on location as well as a reminder to those of you have been drawing a while. I know it’s been helpful for me to remind myself of it’s purpose and benefit.

I begin by talking generally about what negative space is, its benefits and share photographic examples of its use. I also share drawings from a recent Garden sketching trip demonstrating negative space.

I then share with you 5 photos we’ll be using as our image refs and we’ll dive into our first drawing using a limited colour palette.

Although we will be using a mix of mediums the predominant materials for this project will be pencils on top of pre-painted backgrounds which I’ve painted in Liquid Acrylic.

By the end of our time you’ll hopefully feel like you have had plenty of practice looking, drawing and considering negative space which you can then apply to your own sketches.

If you’d like to find out more upgrade to paid or scroll on down to watch the video if you are already a paid member.

Thanks for reading and hope to see you at one of our sessions!
