Dear Reader,
Just thought I’d share an update on a few client projects I’ve completed over the last month or so. And at the end, if you’re interested, I share a short video on my sketchbook practice and how it feeds my client work.
First up is a project I began at the start of the year. This has been for long-standing client bunny homes. I first worked with them originally on their branding assets and developed the ‘bunny’ that became their key character.
Over the years I have continued to provide illustration support painting their housing stock.
This latest project saw the creation of a new set of bunnies to add to the originals but with more human movement. So bunny can now be seen to be lifting mugs, carrying boxes, wearing glasses and hanging from balloons.
The style for these illustrations is largely hand-painted with watercolour and finished with charcoal brush line work. They are created traditionally and then put together in Illustrator where I vectorise the line work and add in the watercolour textures which are all scanned in via Photoshop. It is quite a detailed process but means the work can be blown up to varying sizes which is perfect for hoardings and to advertise new housing developments.
I also worked with new client Away Resorts to supply branding work for a family-friendly Spring festival they were hosting at their Cornwall-based resort Retallack. Called the One and all gathering the brief was to illustrate Cornwall’s folklore mythical creatures alongside historical landmarks, traditional icons and legends.
The illustrated assets were used across the festival site on props, signage, staging and clothing. This was a fun project and involved a lot of things I like to draw- lettering, maps, landmarks, wildlife and nature.
Finally, I’d thought I’d share this short film I made explaining the correlation between the work I do outside in my sketchbook and the work I create for clients inside the studio.
I hope this gives you a better idea of my process and how one feeds the other.
Speak to you again soon when I share my sketchbook pages from May!
Beautiful and inspiring!
I love hearing about your client projects as well as your sketchbook practice!
