Dear Reader,
Welcome to my monthly catch-up.
This is where I give you an overview of what’s been going on this month and highlight any particular projects that I think will be of interest.
I will also include a favourite sketchbook spread, flowers that I see springing up on the Lizard, a comment on the weather and any thoughts on the season and at the end share with you what’s coming up for April.
March Stats
Wildflowers spotted: Alexanders, Celandine, Scurvygrass, Sea Campion!
Weather: Very changeable. One minute it’s blazing sunshine the next we are in the depths of a wintery hailstorm.
This month I have mostly been: Sketching outside, preparing for my Art retreat coming up in April, drawing maps.
This month has been a mix of launching my Wildflower course, responding to comments and questions, illustrating maps for my regular clients Ferment and Glug and beginning work on two more maps for new clients. I’ve also been making a concerted effort to sketch outside on location and have been thoroughly enjoying sketching over painted pages and making marks.
Coming up in April I have my Lizard Sketch Walk Art Retreat at Penmenner house and I’ve been busily working on material and kit lists alongside deciding colour palettes and sketching schedules.
It’s been nice to have something that has forced me to get outside and sketch. Not that I need too much prompting but during these changeable months it can be easier to just stay put and not bother going out.
Join me for a Draw-a-long Wildflower Session
That being said I’ll be hosting a LIVE draw-along zoom session in April. The theme will be Wildflowers and will include just over an hour of drawing exercises, timed challenges and fun warm-ups. You’ll just need a sketchbook and whatever art materials you have to hand. It will be fast, furious and fun and I guarantee you’ll draw a lot of flowers.
I’d love for you to join me. You’ll find all the details and link to book your spot here. I’ll also be making a special announcement for future offerings.
N.B If you’re on my Wildflower sketching course this event is free for you to attend, just check your emails a few days before for the link.
Favourite Sketchbook Page
Without a shadow of a doubt my favourite sketchbook page was created in the making of my latest Podcast episode 12 at Caerthillian Cove one bright and sunny day in March.
You may enjoy watching this video that I recently posted on Youtube about creating work inspired from drawing on location.

Hi Mel! I’m really looking forward to the new Process and Play you have planned. I'm considering trying pre-painted pages. Is it helpful to use a permanent/waterproof media like India ink for pre-painting so it won't mix with subsequent layers? Also,,how do you go about using multiple sketchbooks at once on location…where do you start, etc? Thank you 💐
