Hello readers,

How do you capture the atmosphere in your sketches? Do you want to learn a few quick methods to sketch a moody sky?

Welcome to my seventh post in the series called PROCESS & PLAY.

Each session I take a closer look at a sketchbook PROCESS, chat through what I’m doing and then invite you to join me to PLAY in your sketchbook.

In today’s session I’ll be sharing with you how I sketch the sky and we’ll look at few different ways I use mixed media to do this.

We’ll firstly take a look at pages from my on location sketchbooks commenting on how I’ve previously tackled sketching the sky.

I’ll then share with you what I like to use and show you some quick thumbnail sketches to capture skies with my favourite water soluble crayons, watercolours, inks and coloured pencils.

And then finally working from a few photo refs I’ll demo how I sketch two moody sky scenes in a range of mixed media, breaking down the process step-by-step. You’ll have my photo references to use and colour palette to refer to.

Hopefully you’ll find it fun and apply what we learn to your own sketches.
