Hello readers,

Do you struggle with drawing water? Do you find it hard to work out how to capture its movement, light and colour?

Welcome to my sixth post in the series called PROCESS & PLAY.

Each session I take a closer look at a sketchbook PROCESS, chat through what I’m doing and then invite you to join me to PLAY in your sketchbook.

In today’s session I’ll be sharing with you how I sketch water and in this session we’ll look at ways I capture the deep blue sea.

We’ll firstly take a look at a few pages from my previous years sketchbooks looking at a few different ways I’ve tackled sketching the sea.

I’ll then share with you what I like to use and show you some quick methods to capture water textures with my favourite water soluble crayons, watercolours, inks and coloured pencils. I’ll also swatch all the sea-colours I use.

And then finally working from a photo ref I’ll demo how I sketch a seascape in a range of mixed media, breaking down the scene step-by-step. You’ll have my photo references to use and colour palette to refer to.

Hopefully you’ll find it fun and apply what we learn to your own seascape sketches!
